Former Gateway High School teachers and students will join forces with the Royal Way Choir for a concert at Carnegie Music Hall next year.
Lee Harrity, former high school choir teacher, said he is looking for students who graduated between 1965 and 1975 to join the Royal Way Choir for a reunion concert on June 24, 2011.
Harrity said several of his former students have e-mailed him about how much they enjoyed being a part of the choir. He said he then got the idea to organize a reunion concert.
About 50 former students already have enlisted. Harrity said he would like to see 125 join the group. In 1974, Harrity and his wife, Charmaine, founded the Royal Way Choir, which is a Christian concert group. The choir has appeared in Carnegie Music Hall and Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts, as well as on television in both the U.S. and Canada.
The choir used to practice at Hillcrest Presbyterian Church in Monroeville, until the Harritys moved away. They currently live in Texas.
Former high school teachers Karen Murar and Ken Davis were members of the choir. They said they were excited to come together with former Royal Way Choir members and former students.
The duo has signed up to help the Harritys recruit members for the choir.
"I'm waiting to see what the Holy Spirit has in mind and waiting to see how He leads us," Davis said. "I regard the Holy Spirit as my copilot."
It's exciting, Murar said. "It's very special to come back all these years later," he said.
Once everything is in place, Harrity said, the group will go back to its roots and rehearse at the Hillcrest church every night the week before the concert.
The choir will perform two Christian cantatas, and singers will receive their music beforehand.
Harrity said he's hopeful people will join the choir and come watch the show.
"There are 2,000 seats," he said. "I'd like to fill them all."
